CAN THO TARGETS 2030 TO BECOME THE MEKONG DELTA’S MULTIMODAL LOGISTICS HUB

Can Tho aims to become an international logistics gateway by 2030, with a strategy focused on developing road, inland waterway, seaport, and warehousing infrastructure to reduce logistics costs for goods across the Mekong Delta.

Can Tho Sets the Goal of Becoming a Strategic Logistics Hub of the Mekong Delta

Can Tho – strategically located at the heart of the Mekong Delta – is accelerating its development to become an international multimodal logistics hub. This goal is set to reduce transportation costs and enhance the competitiveness of goods produced by businesses in the region.

Current Potential and Challenges

The Mekong Delta contributes a significant share of the nation’s agricultural output, including:

  • 50% of national rice production,

  • 95% of rice exports,

  • 65% of aquaculture output and nearly 70% of fruit production.

However, more than 80% of goods must be transshipped via Ho Chi Minh City, pushing logistics costs to 30–40% of product value—significantly higher than the global average of around 15%.

In addition, regional logistics infrastructure remains insufficiently synchronized, particularly in:

  • Limited connectivity between inland waterways, roads, and railways,

  • Underdeveloped ports, warehouses, and value-chain logistics services,

  • Logistics enterprises that are mostly small and medium-sized.

Infrastructure and Logistics Development Strategy

To address these challenges, Can Tho authorities are focusing on:

  • Developing interregional transport infrastructure such as the Can Tho – Ca Mau and Chau Doc – Can Tho – Soc Trang expressways to improve connectivity with Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces.

  • Upgrading Cai Cui Port and navigation channels, and expanding satellite ports along the Hau River to increase transport capacity.

  • Investing in Can Tho International Airport, equipping it with facilities to serve international cargo transportation.

  • Completing feasibility studies for the Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho railway, enabling future integration with the national transport network.

Investment Attraction and Modern Logistics Development

Can Tho is calling for investment in large-scale logistics centers, including:

  • A logistics center associated with Cai Cui Port (~100 hectares),

  • An air cargo logistics center (~100 hectares),

  • Logistics service ports within industrial zones,

  • Specialized logistics zones with cold storage and advanced agricultural preservation technologies.

Conclusion

With a multimodal infrastructure development strategy and proactive investment attraction policies, Can Tho is moving toward becoming a key logistics hub of the Mekong Delta and an international logistics connector by 2030.
