Vietnam’s logistics sector plays a crucial role in trade, but current logistics costs—estimated around 14–16% of GDP—remain high compared with targeted levels and global benchmarks. Government estimates suggest a 1% reduction in logistics costs could save roughly US$9 billion, while aligning with average global costs could save up to US$45 billion per year.
Existing bottlenecks:
- Uneven transport and port-to-warehouse connectivity.
- Customs and trade procedures not fully digitized, causing delays and extra costs.
- Fragmented logistics market dominated by small and medium players; limited advanced warehousing, financing, and insurance solutions.
Priority actions recommended:
- Regulatory and policy reforms to attract infrastructure investment and streamline operations.
- Full digitalization of customs and trade processes, including single-window systems and electronic documentation.
- Invest in green-digital infrastructure: port capacity, logistics hubs, cold chain and smart transport links.
- Encourage industry consolidation to create larger logistics providers capable of competing globally.
